Two nights of learning, meeting new people and ver Two nights of learning, meeting new people and very much wishing I could be in two places at once. I really, really enjoyed my time at the Las Vegas WordPress meetup. John’s talk was spot on to the issues I was dealing just that day. Then I got to join in the conversation about recapping WordCamp US.

The next night I headed to TechAlley in Henderson. This was out of my comfort zone, but so glad I went. The speakers were all fantastic and I got to meet several folks that I look forward to revisiting in the future.

We finally made it out to where they filmed scenes of Star Trek Generations, but even at 8am it was still too hot to go exploring. Another trip in the winter and we’ll finally find Captain Kirk’s grave. This park never disappoints. We’ve gotten to see Big Horn Sheep each time we’ve been here. See you in a few months Valley of Fire, and with much cooler temperatures.
Day 3 (for me) - Official Day 2, and last day of W Day 3 (for me) - Official Day 2, and last day of WordCamp US:

Work officially caught up with us this morning. We skipped the first two sets of presentations to get a few things moving and out the door.

I also finally broke down this morning and took the golf cart service between the hotel and the convention center. I’m glad I did because I got to meet Shalom from Chicago. She works in Healthcare and was incredibly eager to learn more about WordPress. She was sponsored to attend. And like many of us north of the Mason-Dixon line, she was quite shocked by the temperatures.

Today I also went solo over to the camp. Craig needed a break to recharge his own battery. The first talk I ended up at was Brian Coords, “The Site is the Source of Truth: Block Themes, AI, and Agency Workflows.” This is also where I got to meet Deb. I wish we had met earlier in the camp.

Brian’s talk was fantastic. I think I may finally start experimenting with Block Themes and Gütenberg finally. Yes, I haven’t been sold on being essentially a beta tester for years, but it’s finally evolved. I’m glad to see it’s really becoming a solid tool. And just like all of the talks so far, AI is a great tool, but it’s not going to take your job.

At lunch, I got to reconnect with Deb, chat with Michelle Frechette (who I finally met), and meet Matt W.’s sister. We talked quite a bit about genealogy and having Connecticut pre-revolutionary founding roots.

After lunch, I attended “The Agentic Web is Coming - is WordPress Ready” from Miriam Schwab. Miriam works for Elementor, which I am not a fan of, but I am a fan of Miriam. Her talk was great as well. She got into the nuts and bolts of debugging, essentially how AI is searching and indexing our sites and how to make sure your site content is structured to get on the radar. What everyone tells you will work, what actually works, and where we’re really at with all of this. … more in the comments.

Day 2 (for me) - Official Day 1 of WordCamp US: C Day 2 (for me) - Official Day 1 of WordCamp US:

Craig and I ended up connecting with another fellow WordCamper every morning at the hotel for iced coffee. A shout-out to Levi from North Dakota. It was great meeting you, talking about our shared appreciation for the lack of humidity, even if the sun was trying to cook us.

The Day 2 keynote was incredible. Loyal Pyczynski, a former Disney employee, presented it. Loyal was a very interesting person, with a very interesting upbringing, and an equally interesting physical challenge. His presentation was inspiring, motivating, humorous, and heartwarming—many kudos to the WCUS team for securing Loyal as a presenter. During the presentation, I was texting my Disney/Star Wars friends, IFKYK.

Next up was Michelle Hunt’s presentation on the state of Design Systems in the world of AI. Her title was perfect: “Everything is Fine, and Nothing is Good.” It was the perfect reminder we all needed that while AI is helping us a lot, from more complex work to work done faster, it is not replacing the knowledge, perspective, and design strategy of a human who has all that experience.

Day 1 (for me) - Showcase Day: WordCamp US Showc Day 1 (for me) - Showcase Day:

WordCamp US Showcase Day was very interesting. First it was amazing to see the complex and robust projects people were using WordPress to power. Second was the major theme of the day: AI is a tool, it is not going to take your job but it is going to change your job. It was repeatedly discussed how much it’s like a very smart unruly child. It needs guardrails, it needs lots of context, it needs lots of oversight. I think of the adage, trash in, trash out. It was also amazing to hear that only 3% of developers actually trust what AI is generating for them. #wcus
A little sightseeing before heading down to Phoeni A little sightseeing before heading down to Phoenix. We headed to @gabicoffeebakery to see what all the hype was about, per the recommendation from a local friend. The macarons were an experience. I’ve never had such intricate and fancy macarons before. The coffees were also really good.

The skies were threatening again. Some mammatus clouds were forming.

I could take pictures of the clouds all day.

We found the mermaids of Las Vegas at the Silverton.

These guys were more interesting, no offense ladies.

A shout out to our team member @mathematician4268 they even made a sign for her.

Good bye Las Vegas, for a few days. We started the adventure down to Phoenix but first Lake Mead. Yup there’s still water in it.

Hello Arizona… it’s been a while (2023).

The landscape of Arizona is absolutely beautiful and fascinating. The age of these rocks is just mind blowing.

The road just keeps going.

Welcome to the Downtown district of Phoenix.

Great view! Thanks @sheratonphoenixdowntown for setting us up with such a great view and a lovely room to call home for a few days.

Sunset from the end of our hall.

Dinner at the lovely restaurant at the hotel.

Sitting out on the terrace actually enjoying the heat and a cocktail.

Good night Phoenix, please don’t try to kill us in the daylight.
I’ll never tire of the amazing skies in the southw I’ll never tire of the amazing skies in the southwest and the vast views. Our first full day was capped off with some incredible monsoons and lightning. We opted to go for a drive into Red Rock Canyon. The skies did not disappoint. No filters.

Good bye east coast.

Ready to pack in as much learning as possible.

Clouds are my favorite. For anyone who remembers our first site in 2001 knows the blue sky and clouds were a main focal point.

Getting things done … dial up speed.

Hello Vegas!

It’s nice to be recognized and get some perks.

Good Morning Vegas and @kregmusic

Sometimes there is a point when it’s even too hot to use the pool.

Welcomed storms…how can you not enjoy those ominous clouds. Let the adventures begin.
